Circular Agri-Food Economy Applications
To support the government's advocacy of organic composting and eco-friendly farming policies, we provide contract farmers with professional knowledge and technical assistance to improve their farming practices along with the use of biopesticides and organic composting techniques to enhance crop growth. This approach aims to increase the efficiency of resource utilization and establish a circular agricultural economy. Furthermore, we purchase the crops grown by farmers for our production, thereby creating a sustainable circular agri-food system.
In 2022, 2,622.8 tons of spent mushroom compost and 1,841.1 tons of chicken manure were acquired along with 1,479.7 tons of bleaching clay and 1,168.8 tons of food sludge. They were processed to produce organic fertilizer products, which total sold 10,407.5 tons.

Carbon Label Products
Through carbon labels, they provide insight into carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions from the production process; thus, we can modify the process flow, packing material and transportation to reduce carbon emissions. We continue to hold Carbon-Footprint labels for 22 products in sesame oil, dried bonito flakes, and pet food.
Additionally, we regularly update the contents in the three product category rules (PCR).

Animal Welfare

Our ecological farm in Chung Liao Township, Nantou County offers a comfortable, spacious breeding environment and the modernized climate-smart farm and allows the animals to have access to plenty of sunshine, outdoor surroundings, and the opportunity to express their natural behaviors to ensure animal welfare.

To minimize the effect on growth of animals from the climate changes, our farms are enclosed with smart sensors. We focus not only on the natural grazing environment but also on the biological preventive measures in making sure to reduce contamination sources.

We have pasture-raised chicken on our farm which provide pasture-raised eggs. We serve our pasture-raised chicken with non-medicated feed and forage. From feed production to broiler raising to slaughter to meat processing, we have a vertical integration, which allows for traceability, production transparency and quality control.

In 2022, 13 broiler chicken farms are certified under the company's traceable agricultural products verification, and 11 broiler chicken farms received single certification.

Water Footprint
Charming Food adopted and certied with ISO 14046: 2014, Water Footprint Project

Tap water is the main source of water used at Charming Food for the production process, which requires a large amount of tap water. Therefore, a wastewater recycling system was installed at the time during factory construction to collect and treat the wastewater and sewage generated from the production process. The wastewater after treatment through the membrane bioreactor, MBR, the system is then reused for washing chicken transport trucks, chicken cages, the surrounding environment, roads, and irrigation for plants, to maximize the use of water resources.

Considering the large amount of water used for production and the uneven rainfall which could lead to water shortage, Charming Food took part in the "Industry Water Efficiency Improvement Program "specifically for "Water Footprint Certification Counseling" which was organized by the Bureau of Industry, Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2022.

With the assistance of NCKU Research & Development Foundation - the
Sustainable Development Center of the National Cheng Kung University,
we evaluated the utilization of water resources in meat processing plants and established our product water footprint assessment procedures based on the framework of the ISO 14046:2014 Water Footprint Standard. The life cycle of water footprint assessment is used as the basis for product, process, and company. This helps us understand our water usage and the water usage in the supply chain, serving as a source of data for management.

We passed the verification in October 2022. In the future, we will continue to monitor daily water usage, improve water utilization efficiency, and align with ESG environmental sustainability goals.
